A Linux Quickie
Linux is an operating system, like Microsoft's Windows or
Apple's Mac OS X Ten! not
"X")), which allows a command line (such as DOS) or graphical
user interface (such as Explorer or the Finder) to be run.
Linux was created by a man named Linux Torvalds [Recent
News]. He created the Linux kernel - or the heart of
the Linux operating system - and he continues to improve upon
his designs to this day. He is the father of Linux.
Speaking of his software, it's important to note that it is
maintained under the GNU GPL
(General Public License), which means that everyone has access
to the code and can modify it. This is good.
The origins of Linux are from Unix, which is a very old and
very powerful OS. This powerful environment, designed
from the ground up with security and modularity in mind, and
now combined with a graphic user interface (GUI), makes for a
terrific platform from which to build software &
hardware.
You can get, for free, many different flavors of Linux.
If you would like to download, install, and play around with
Linux, DO IT! For anyone mildly interested in tinkering,
there's nothing better than
a whole new OS!
